Men can experience a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia 1. However, gender stereotypes and stigma can make it harder for both men and their healthcare professionals to recognize when they might need mental health support 1.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, men are less likely to have received mental health treatment than women in the past year 1. This doesn’t mean men don’t need or benefit from treatment. Rather, “men can find it more difficult being open about their mental health and seeking support because it’s likely to go against the kinds of messages they received growing up,” explains Dr. Elena Touroni, a consultant psychologist and co-founder of The Chelsea Psychology Clinic 1.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, it’s important to seek help. Here are some resources that may be helpful:
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): NAMI is a grassroots organization that provides support, education, and advocacy for people affected by mental illness. They offer a helpline, support groups, and educational programs 1.
Mental Health America: Mental Health America is a community-based nonprofit that provides education, advocacy, and support for people affected by mental illness. They offer a screening tool, support groups, and educational resources 1.
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential support to people in distress. They offer a helpline, online chat, and resources for people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts 1.
I hope this helps!
